Macedonian Pride Gives Birth to New Society

Today marks the first official Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the recently-formed LTU Macedonian Students’ Society at Melbourne’s La Trobe University.

The formation of the club was the result of weeks of work and dedication by a group of passionate Macedonian students on campus who felt such a club was necessary given the large Macedonian population at the university.

25 dedicated young adults attended the inaugural AGM of the new society at La Trobe’s Bundoora Campus and an executive committee was voted in and formed. Members of the RMIT University Macedonian Students’ Society were also present to show their support for their fellow Macedonian youth. The executive committees of the clubs at La Trobe, RMIT and Melbourne University have all been in contact with each other and plan to hold joint events in the near future for the community.

The La Trobe-based club currently has 30 enlisted members and is expecting that number to grow rapidly now that the club has officially affiliated with the La Trobe Student Union. The goals and objectives of the club according to the club’s online constitution are:

  1. Raise the awareness of Macedonian Culture at La Trobe University.
  2. Promote tourism to Macedonia.
  3. Promote the study of Macedonian at La Trobe University both internally, as well as externally.
  4. Enhance domestic student’s perceptions of Macedonian culture and preserve this culture for future generations.
  5. To strengthen relations between Australia and the Republic of Macedonia.

The establishment of these university clubs is a win for the Macedonian-Australian community and in particular our youth who have taken the initiative to proudly express their culture and identity at a tertiary level of education and allow for all of Australia to see who the Macedonian people are.
